I just read news that Jack Hardy passed away yesterday of cancer at age 63. This is sad news, but what a musical legacy he left behind. Though not so familiar with his own music, I've discovered many artists involved in Fast Folk, such as Shawn Colvin, Lucy Kaplansky, Richard Shindell, Cliff Eberhardt and of course John. It is largely due to Jack's efforts these artists became known to many. And of course "Jack's Crows" is still my favorite JG album (if not my favorite, period.)

Hi Rogue,

On the John Gorka videosite link (below) you can listen to John (in 2005 on mpr) talking about Jack Hardy (plus you can listen to John's favourite Jack Hardy song "Potter's Field" and I also edit a live version of the John Gorka song "Up until then" by Jack Hardy, Margo Hennebach & Shawn Colvin from 1988.

Last months I also edited a lot of live videos and great photos so I hope you all will go to www.johngorka.nl

Thanks,

Sad. I guess 63 is young...

He had a big impact on a lot of songwriters. He had a big impact on people who had big impact on me, for which I am thankful..

"The only thing that makes you a songwriter is writing songs. And writing songs. And writing songs. Just write. Write now, judge later. Finish the song, even if you suspect that it is no good. Finish it. Plug ahead. Even if it is only a half-baked idea got on the subway or in the car on the way to your weekly songwriting meeting, go with it. Finish it. Even if you wake up in the middle of the night and have an idea, write it. Sort it out later. Sometimes it takes you years to realize what you have written (for the better or the worse). Have faith in yourself, in your creative process, not in your critical process. No one ever wrote a song or improved their songwriting by having an opinion on a song, theirs or someone else’s. The only way to improve is to write." ~ Jack Hardy
